Gluten-Free Thanksgiving: Which Store-Bought Gravy, Stuffing, Broth and Pie Crust Pass, Label-Checked for 2026
We read the labels of 20 Thanksgiving staples on the brand's page and a retailer listing. The usual gravy mix, stuffing, fried onions, cream of mushroom soup and pie crust all list wheat. Every chicken broth we checked lists no gluten ingredient, and there's a gluten-free swap for the gravy, the soup and the crust.
The short version
Most of a Thanksgiving table is fine; the gluten sits in five store-bought staples. We read the labels of 20 products on the brand's own page and a retailer listing, both on October 21, 2026. The usual gravy mix, boxed stuffing, French's fried onions, Campbell's cream of mushroom and Pillsbury pie crust all list wheat. Every chicken broth we checked lists no gluten ingredient, and there's a labeled gluten-free swap for the gravy, the soup and the crust. One trap: the "Contains" line never names barley, so read the ingredients.
How we checked
For each product we read the ingredient statement, the "Contains" line and any gluten-free claim on two current pages: the brand's own product page and a major grocery retailer's listing for the same item and size (mostly Food Lion; Giant and Stop & Shop where Food Lion had none). A script re-read every page on October 21, 2026 and confirmed each quote was still there, and that none of the gluten words (wheat, barley, rye, malt, brewer's yeast) appeared on the pages for the products we list as passing. If we couldn't read a product on both, it isn't here.
We only call something "gluten-free" where a label says so. Where a product lists no gluten ingredient but makes no claim, we say exactly that.
If you or a guest has celiac disease, use this as a shopping list, not a clearance: check the package you buy, because recipes change and two of the rows below already differ between the brand's page and the store's. This is our reading of the labels, not medical advice.
Which Thanksgiving staples have gluten?
| Product (size) | Gluten listed |
|---|---|
| McCormick Turkey Gravy Seasoning Mix (0.87 oz) | Wheat starch, enriched wheat flour |
| Heinz HomeStyle Roasted Turkey Gravy (12 oz jar) | Bleached wheat flour |
| Stove Top Stuffing Mix for Turkey (6 oz) | Enriched wheat flour (first ingredient) |
| Pepperidge Farm Herb Seasoned Classic Stuffing (12 oz) | Wheat flour, whole wheat flour, malted barley flour |
| French's Original Crispy Fried Onions (6 oz) | Wheat flour |
| Campbell's Condensed Cream of Mushroom (10.5 oz) | Wheat flour |
| Pillsbury Refrigerated Pie Crusts (2 ct, 14.1 oz) | Enriched bleached wheat flour, wheat starch |
That's the whole green bean casserole in two rows: the soup and the onions both list wheat. French's even answers a shopper on its own product page: "French's® Original Crispy Fried Onions does contain gluten."
Which ones are gluten-free?
| Product (size) | Label says |
|---|---|
| McCormick Gluten Free Turkey Gravy Mix (0.88 oz) | Gluten-free; corn and potato starch. Retailer lists Beyond Celiac certification |
| Campbell's Condensed Gluten Free Cream of Mushroom (10.5 oz) | Gluten-free; rice flour in place of wheat |
| Pacific Foods Organic Condensed Cream of Mushroom (10.5 oz) | Gluten-free |
| Swanson Chicken Broth (32 oz) | Gluten-free |
| Pacific Foods Organic Free Range Chicken Broth (32 oz) | "Free of gluten" |
| College Inn Chicken Broth (32 oz carton) | Gluten-free |
| Better Than Bouillon Roasted Chicken Base (8 oz) | No gluten ingredient; retailer labels it gluten-free |
| Bob Evans Original Mashed Potatoes (24 oz, refrigerated) | No gluten ingredient; retailer labels it gluten-free |
| Cool Whip Original (8 oz) | No gluten ingredient; no gluten-free claim |
| Schär Gluten Free Sandwich Rolls (2 ct, 5.3 oz) | Certified gluten-free |
Label varies, check yours. Three more list no gluten ingredient on either page, but the brand's page and the store's listing show different recipes, so the carton in your hand may not match either:
| Product (size) | Both labels say |
|---|---|
| Kitchen Basics Original Chicken Stock (32 oz) | No gluten ingredient; retailer labels it gluten-free |
| Pacific Foods Organic Turkey Broth (32 oz) | No gluten ingredient; retailer says "free of gluten" |
| Mi-Del Gluten Free Graham Style Pie Crust (7.1 oz) | Gluten-free; retailer lists it as certified |
Notice that McCormick and Campbell's each have a row on both sides. The brand doesn't tell you anything; the words "Gluten Free" on the front of that specific package do. The two McCormick turkey gravy packets hang on the same shelf and differ by a hundredth of an ounce.
Why the "Contains" line isn't enough
The allergen line on a U.S. label covers the nine major allergens, and the FDA's list names wheat but not barley or rye, even though the FDA describes gluten as proteins "found in certain grains (for example, wheat, barley, and rye)." So a "Contains" line can say "wheat" and stay silent about the barley in the same food.
Pepperidge Farm's stuffing is the live example. Its ingredient list includes malted barley flour. Its Contains line reads "Contains: wheat, soy." Nothing wrong with the label; it's doing exactly what the rule asks. But if you scanned only the bold line, you'd miss a gluten grain. The same goes for anything with malt, malt vinegar, malt flavoring or brewer's yeast.
The gluten-free claim works the other way. Under 21 CFR 101.91, a food labeled gluten-free has to come in under 20 ppm gluten, and wheat, rye and barley all count. That's why the claim on the front is worth more than an absence of "wheat" in the Contains line. (Maltodextrin, which shows up in several of these labels, is a starch, usually from corn, not malt.)
The table, dish by dish
Turkey. Plain turkey is just turkey, but read two things on the wrapper: the added solution (salt, broth and flavorings are injected into many birds) and any gravy packet tucked inside. We couldn't match a whole-turkey listing to two sources this year, so we're not naming birds; read yours. And cook any stuffing outside the turkey if a gluten-free guest is eating the meat.
Gravy. The jar and the classic packet list wheat. Use the gluten-free mix above, or make pan gravy from drippings and a broth from the table, thickened with cornstarch.
Stuffing. No boxed stuffing we could check passed. Cube and dry gluten-free bread or rolls (the Schär rolls above work) and build it from there with one of the broths. If you cook it in a pan that's held wheat stuffing before, wash it well.
Green bean casserole. Swap the soup for Campbell's Gluten Free or Pacific's cream of mushroom. The fried onions are the harder part: French's lists wheat, and we didn't find a gluten-free version we could check twice. Top it with your own shallots fried in a little cornstarch, or skip the topping.
Mashed potatoes. Potatoes, butter and milk are gluten-free on their own. Bob Evans' refrigerated mashed potatoes list no gluten ingredient if you're buying them ready-made.
Cranberry sauce. A canned cranberry sauce is usually cranberries and sweetener. We couldn't read the brand's own ingredient statement for the big brand this year, so we're not listing it; read the can.
Pie. The crust is where the gluten usually is, though some pecan and apple recipes add flour to the filling, so check yours. Pillsbury's refrigerated crust lists wheat. Mi-Del's gluten-free graham-style crust is a pressed crumb crust, which suits pumpkin. Cool Whip lists no gluten ingredient, though it doesn't claim to be gluten-free (what else is in Cool Whip).
Rolls. Regular dinner rolls are wheat. Schär's are certified gluten-free; warm them separately, on their own sheet.
The quick rule for the Thanksgiving aisle
In the 20 labels we read, the pattern was this: anything thickened, breaded or bread-based lists wheat unless the front says "Gluten Free." Gravy, stuffing, fried onions, cream soups and crusts all did. The broths, the plain sides and the toppings mostly didn't. Then read the full ingredient list once for barley, rye, malt and brewer's yeast, because the Contains line won't name them.
Cross-contact in the kitchen matters as much as the label for anyone with celiac disease: a shared spoon, colander, toaster or roasting pan can undo a careful shopping trip. For how "gluten-free" claims work on grains, see Is oat milk gluten-free?, and if you're eating out over the holiday weekend, the gluten-free Chipotle order.
