The fine print

The short version
Label Snob is an iOS app that analyzes ingredient labels using artificial intelligence. We try to collect as little about you as possible, and we try to be specific about what we do collect.
- We send label-scan photos to Anthropic, PBC for ingredient analysis, and Vibe Check lifestyle photos to Google LLC for the editorial vibe call. Neither provider uses API submissions to train their models.
- We do not store your photos on our servers. We store the verdict text on your device only.
- We do not sell your data. There are no third-party advertisers.
- You can revoke AI scanning anytime in Profile → Privacy in the app, and you can delete saved scans any time from the Saves tab.
Who we are
Label Snob is operated by Meria(“Meria,” “we,” “us”). For privacy questions, write to privacy@labelsnob.app.
What we collect
Photos you scan
When you tap Scan in the app, the photo you take or pick is sent over an encrypted connection to our analysis service (a Supabase Edge Function we operate). That service forwards the photo to one of two AI providers depending on what you scanned:
- Anthropic's Claude API reads label photos (food, body, supplements, restaurant menus) and returns the ingredient verdict.
- Google's Gemini API reads Vibe Check photos (a meal, a shelf, a moment — anything without a label to scan) and returns the editorial vibe call.
We do not retain the photo after the scan completes. Neither Anthropic nor Google uses API submissions to train their models; they process the photo to return the verdict and don't keep it for anything else.
Verdict text and saved scans
The verdict text (score, ingredient list, breakdown, the verdict notes) is returned to your device. If you tap Save on a verdict, it is stored locally on your device using Apple's SwiftData framework, and — if you are signed in — synced to your Label Snob account on our backend (Supabase) so the saves follow you across devices and survive a reinstall. You can delete any saved scan from the Saves tab at any time; deletes propagate to the server.
Your account (Sign in with Apple)
Sign-in is required to use Label Snob. We use Sign in with Apple, which gives us only the email address Apple chooses to share with us (you can choose Apple's private relay email to keep your real address hidden) and an Apple user identifier. We use the email only to identify your account and to send essential service notices (e.g., a receipt-of-deletion confirmation). We never sell or share your email and we do not run email marketing. You can delete your account, and the email and user identifier with it, anytime from Profile → Delete Account in the app.
Your dietary preferences and allergens
Label Snob lets you set dietary preferences (e.g., flag seed oils, gluten, dairy, specific allergens). These preferences are stored on your device and, if you are signed in, synced to your account on our backend (Supabase) so they apply across devices. We use them only to personalize the verdict you see — to flag what you care about and quiet what you don't. We never sell them and never share them with advertisers.
Your location (Map tab)
The Map tab surfaces clean places nearby. When you open it, the app asks iOS for your location (precise) and uses it only on your device to compute distance and order the list. Your location is never stored on our servers and never tied to your account. If you deny location permission, the Map tab still works — it just won't sort by distance. You can revoke the permission anytime in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Label Snob.
Anonymous device identifier (VPID)
We assign your device a random anonymous identifier (VPID) when you first launch the app. The VPID is sent with each scan request so our analysis service can apply rate limits and detect abusive traffic. The VPID is not tied to your name, email, or Apple ID, and it is reset if you delete and reinstall the app.
Subscription and account data (if you choose to subscribe)
Subscriptions are processed by Apple through the App Store using StoreKit 2. We never see your payment method, name, or billing address. Apple shares with us only the entitlement status (whether your subscription is active or not) so the app can unlock Pro features.
Product-interaction analytics
We record aggregated, non-identifying product-interaction events (e.g., a scan happened, a verdict was shown, a paywall was viewed) so we can understand which parts of the app are working and which need fixing. These events are not linked to your name or email, are not used for advertising, and are never sold. They power internal analytics only.
Diagnostic data (crash reports)
With your permission (via iOS's standard diagnostic-sharing settings), Apple shares anonymized crash reports with us. We use these reports only to fix bugs. They are not linked to your account and are not used for advertising or profile-building.
Third-party services we use
Label Snob is built on a small set of vendors. Each one receives only the data needed to do its job:
| Service | What it does | What it sees |
|---|---|---|
| Anthropic, PBC | AI analysis of label photos. | The photo you scan and the prompt we send. Anthropic doesn't use API submissions to train models. |
| Google LLC | AI analysis of Vibe Check (lifestyle) photos. | The lifestyle photo you snap and the prompt we send. Google doesn't use API submissions to train models. |
| Supabase | Hosts our Edge Functions and an anonymous product cache. | Your VPID + the scan request payload. No personal data. |
| Apple | App Store distribution, StoreKit 2, Sign in with Apple, push notifications. | Whatever Apple normally sees per their privacy policy. |
| Cloudflare | DNS for labelsnob.app. | Standard DNS query metadata. |
What we do NOT do
- We do not sell your data to anyone.
- We do not run third-party advertising or ad-network SDKs.
- We do not track you across other apps or websites.
- We do not retain photos after a scan. The image is read once and dropped.
- We do not sell or share your email, your saves, or your dietary preferences with advertisers or data brokers. Ever.
- We do not store your location on our servers. Location is used on-device only, by the Map tab, to sort nearby places.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), the EU/UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), or similar laws. These typically include:
- The right to know what we hold about you.
- The right to delete what we hold about you.
- The right to export what we hold about you.
- The right to opt out of any sale of personal data (we don't sell any).
- The right not to be discriminated against for exercising these rights.
Email privacy@labelsnob.app from the email tied to your account (if any) and we'll honor verified requests within 30 days.
Children's privacy
Label Snob is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have collected information from a child under 13, email privacy@labelsnob.app and we will delete it promptly.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the app evolves. When we change anything material, we'll bump the effective date at the top and post a notice in the app. The previous version remains accessible via the page's git history at github.com/MeriaApp/labelsnob-marketing.
